May 14, 2009 we flew from Los Angeles to New York and on to Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino or FCO) airport near Rome. After a shuttle to the port city of Civitavecchia, we boarded the largest ship afloat, the Celebrity Solstice for an 11 day cruise in the eastern Mediterranean. We saw Messina in Sicily, Naples, Capri and Pompeii in Italy, Santorini, Rhodes, Mykonos, Piraeus and Athens in Greece, and Kusadasi and Ephesus in Turkey. After the cruise we rented a car and explored Italy's west coast, visiting the small towns of Itri, Taverna, Isoletta and Ceprano, and stayed in the coastal gem of Gaeta. Then we drove to Rome and spent two days at the Domina Hotel while exploring Rome using great public transportation - train, subway and bus - before flying home May 28th.
