The Birch Tree's Secret
I
At the clear line of a flowery beach
A birch tree was singing among its beautiful songs
And then I suddenly heard in his branch
Once he was singing like this
II
Oh, I know I know many a secret
How many girls have wept under my branches
Many a boys there saw in happiness
At the blue wave of the bay
III
As the bright moon shone on my dark branch
One came and cut a name in my bark
It was one name alone and he kissed it
That no one has seen
IV
Next evening there came a girl
Looking carefully around her and cutting a name in the tree
One name only she cut and she kissed it
That no one has seen
V
Next evening as the moon shone my branch
There came one and there came the other
Whispering silently as the wind seeking the friends name
In my faithful white bosom.
